FAQ’s

What does SUP mean?

SUP is an acronym that’s short for Stand Up Paddle Boarding. Commonly mistaken for the term cool people use to greet each other (sup, man?), SUP is a fun water sport that people of all ages enjoy.

I am totally new to SUP, where do I start?

You have come to the right place! For adults (10 years and older), the best place to start is with our group beginner lessons, these are offered at both of our locations; Byron Bay and Sydney. We start the lesson with important safety information. We will then cover the basics including; warm up, how to stand and control the board, correct posture, positioning, proper stroke and turning techniques. As well as, safe entry and exit from the water. For children under the age of 10 we recommend private family lessons.

How many people are in a group?

Our instructor/student ratio is small. We have a maximum of six people in a group with an instructor in Sydney and eight people in one group with an instructor for Byron Bay. This small ratio allows you to learn quickly as you get plenty of attention from your instructor.

Do I need to book ?

What do I need to bring?

All you need to bring along is your swimwear, a towel, water and a hat. It is not compulsory to have a hat or water, but it is recommended in summer. We provide all equipment ( SUP board, paddle, wetsuit, rash vest, sunscreen and zinc).

Do I need a life vest?

We recommend you wear a life vest if you’re not a confident swimmer, or if you don’t feel confident in your swimming ability. Life vests are provided as part of your lesson.

Do lessons include the rental or equipment as well?

It sure does! Our lesson price includes everything you need; SUP board, paddle, wetsuit, rashvest, life vest and sunscreen. Just wear your swimwear and bring along a towel.

Can I store valuables during my lesson?

We encourage you to leave anything valuable or important in your hotel room or at home, we do provide storage for your clothes and towel.

What time are the lessons?

We schedule our lessons to take into account the daily tides and conditions – so our lesson times change from day to day. When you make a booking you will be shown the time options for your preferred date.

When is the best time to SUP? Morning or afternoon?

The best time to SUP depends on the tides. We schedule our beginner lessons around the low tide which is usually the best time to SUP.

What if it’s raining?

As we say, you’re on the water anyway! Some of the best water conditions come with the rain! Our lessons are held rain, hail or shine. The only reason we will cancel if the conditions are dangerous.

Can I change my lesson date or time?

We try to stay flexible and can usually accommodate changes to booked lessons- as long as you provide us with at least 24 hours notice.

What is your cancellation policy?

We SUP in all weather providing it is safe. If the conditions are unsafe, then we will reschedule the lesson. If we change the time and you are unable to come to the new lesson, then we will provide a refund. Otherwise there are no refunds, transfers to other people, or cancellations.

If you would like to reschedule a lesson you have booked, we need at least 24 hours notice. Failure to give the necessary notice will mean forfeiture of that lesson.

Will we be paddling on waves?

All of our adult group lessons are held in flat water conditions. If you wish to surf on waves we have a number of locations where the waves are perfect for SUP surfing, please enquire with our team and we can arrange a private lesson for SUP.
