SUP in Winter

Stand up Paddle boarding isn’t just for summer; it’s also a great winter activity! Winter provides excellent conditions and many glorious sunny days! Get started on your new hobby this winter and by summer you’ll be paddling like a pro!

Offshore winds
Winter winds are generally offshore creating a calm water surface with minimal ‘chop’. These offshore winds provide great SUP conditions and allow participants to enjoy a stress-free paddle with no bumps to make you lose balance. These calm conditions make learning more advanced skills like turning a breeze.

No crowds
Just saying the word ‘winter’ in Australia gives Aussies the chills and makes us dig out a hoodie and Ugg boots! Winter is always less crowded; not having to contend with hordes of people is a nice change of pace especially at busy beaches! The reduced crowds allow beginners to gain confidence in the water without having to worry about other paddlers and surfers.

Delightful temperatures
We are in Australia after all and winter still provides very pleasant temperatures year-round. Australian winter temperatures are what most Europeans would consider a summers day, Sydney’s lowest average temperature during the winter is still a mild 17 degrees! In calm conditions, most participants will stay dry while paddling and wetsuits are always provided if you are worried about getting cold.

It’s Sun Smart
The Australian sun is brutal during the summer months; winter gives us some relief from the harsh elements. Winter allows paddlers to spend more time on the water enjoying longer distances and whole day tours without getting sunburnt or dehydrated. It’s important to follow the Cancer Councils Sun Smart principles when participating in outdoor activities year round. Remember SLIP, SLOP, SLAP, SEEK, SLIDE!
